Famous Five : Part I

In this measureless world it’s very difficult to make ones name renowned. Whenever we being Nepalese hear about the Nepalese name or thing is being popular we are so proud of it. Still many people around the world don’t know about Nepal and Nepalese. But there are few things and personalities who made their name known. As we know Mount Everest and Gautam Buddha are ours precious identity to introduce Nepal and us as well.
Below are the names of some famous personalities and their achievements.
1. Tenzing Norgay Sherpa
He was born on May 1914 Khumba Nepal and died on 9th may 1986. He was a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer. We know him because among the most famous mountain climber in history, he was one of the first two individuals known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, which he accomplished on 29th May 1953 with Edmund Hillary. He received the George Medal from Queen Elizabeth II and also the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal. King Tribhuvan also presented him with Order of the Star of Nepal. He received Padma Bhusan by government of India. He was on the list of times as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

2. Udit Narayan Jha
Udit Narayan jha or Udit narayan is a singer. He was born on December 1, 1960 at Bhardaha, Saptari District, Nepal. He is known by his melodious voice. Udit Narayan being Nepalese play back singer he is singing mainly in Bollywood (Hindi songs). He has sung more than 25, 000 songs in more than 34 languages including Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, and Tamil. and so on. He has won the National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards. He was awarded the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu by late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and also Padma Shri by the Government of India.

3. Manisha Koirala
Manisha Koirala is an actress. She was born on 16th August 1970 Nepal. She made her name by her acting prowess in Nepal as well as in India. Apart from Nepali movies she has acted in number of Indian movies and also acted in many languages like Tamil, Telegu, and Malayalam as well. She has won number of awards like Smita Patil Memorial Award, Filmfare Award for Best Actress, Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance Bombay. Star Screen Award Best Actress, Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards, and Gorkha Dakshina Bahu honoured by the King if Nepal for her achievement in the Indian Film Industry. She is UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador and social activist as well. As a social activist she is specifically working with organisations to promote women’s rights, prevention of violence against women and also to prevent the human trafficking of Nepali girls for prostitution. Last year she was diagnosed with cancer and now she is out of it but still treatment is going on. She is giving advices and inspiring other who are suffering from the dreaded diseases and doing number of campaigns as well.

4. Anuradha Koirala
Anuradha Koirala is a Social Activist. She was born in 14th April, 1949 Rumjata, Okhaldhunga, Nepal. We know her by her influential social activities. She is a social activist and the founder and director of Maiti Nepal a non-profit organization in Nepal dedicated to helping to victims of sex trafficking. Her organization helped and rescued countless Nepalese women from the brothels in India and reunited with their families as well. Because of her courageous work Koirala received the Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts on 2006. One of the joyful moments for being Nepalese was when she won the CNN Heroes Year award 2010, in Los Angeles, California. She received USD 100,000 for continuity of her work of Maiti Nepal, in addition to USD 25,000 as a token of appreciation, from the CNN.

5. Prabal Gurung
Prabal Gurung is a fashion designer. He was born on March 31, 1979. He is world famous for his designing creativity. Even in student life while he was studying in National Institute of Fashion Technology, he apprenticed at several local production and fashion houses. His design is praises by famous people and celebrity of the world. His designs have been worn by Oprah Winfery, Michelle Obama, Catherine, The duchess of Cambridge, Lady Gaga, Jennifer, Lawrence, Demi Moore, and many more high class personalities. Recently in Golden Globe Award famous American actress and producer Sandra Bullock was wearing his design. He was the recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Fun Award and received a nomination for the 2010 CFDA Swarovski Womenwear Award. He was also chosen by prominent fashion editors, retailers, designers, and business people. He was awarded runner-up for the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
