Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN)has extended Team Nepal’s head coach Pubudu Dassanayake’s contract by just three months, earlier a month ago announcing that his coaching will be extended for-a year.
On 25th March, CAN announced that the Dassanayake would remain with the Nepali Cricket team for another year. But on Tuesday CAN reverse the decision and just extended his contract by three months only.
On the departure of Nepal Cricket Team to Malaysia to play ACC Premier League, the cricket governing body handed him a three month contract extension.
This unexpected decision made Dassanayake disappointed. “I was assured a year-long contract extension before its expiry on May 29.But now they have handed me a contract for three months. As per document i will be team coach until June 20.” “I don’t have any idea why i was given just a three month’s contract.” said the confused coach Dassanayake at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
Dassanayake have been told the reason behind the three months contract is due to current on-going investigation by the Commission of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), who has forced CAN to put his one year long contract on hold. General Secretary of CAN Ashok Nath Pyakurel said, “There is no reason why his contract won’t be extended. He will be get a full term (one-year) extension once the board meeting approves it. The work execution committee is obliged to follow the board decision.”
But in contrast the statement of CAN the Nepal Cricket Team Captain and skipper Paras Khadka claimed that CAN was sketching to sack Dassanayake from the post of coach of Nepal Cricket Team. He further said that the Dassayanke guided Nepal Cricket to many achievements including the World T20 in Bangladesh and this outcome is more humiliation to one of the big figures in Nepali Cricket.
“It will be a huge loss to the Nepali cricket of he walks away. CAN have been blaming the coach for instigating the recent boycott of Nepal Cricket team.” said Khadka. “He has been persecuted for something he is unaware of.”
Pubudu Dassanayake is a Sri Lankan Cricketer who played in 11 Tests and 16 ODIs (One day Internationals) from 1993 to 1994. He was coach of Canada for four years from 2007 to 2011, leading them to 2011 Cricket World Cup. At that time Canada Cricket Team won its second ever World Cup match.
In August 23, 2011 Cricket Association Nepal (CAN) appointed Dassanayake as the coach of National team. He is one of the capable coach who brings the result in flying colours as we been witnessed the Nepal Cricket Team’s biggest achievement recently in World Cup T20.
Do you think the three-month extension contract to coach Dassanayake is due to CIAA intervention at CAN or it’s a politics of the CAN??
